Central MS Crime Stoppers / Cold Case Missing Person

It has now been 48 years since John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin disappeared. John Heflin was last seen on New Year’s Day 1969. His wife, Alexis Heflin was informed by family members that he was missing. The couple had been married for six years before she moved with their two sons from their home in Oktibbeha County, MS to Chicago, IL. Buddy Heflin moved to Jackson, MS to work at a Kroger grocery store with friend.  It has long been believed his disappearance is connected to something illegal involving him and a couple in Longview which is a small community just outside of Starkville, MS. One day, he asked a friend who worked in a coffee shop in the Columbus, MS area, if she would ride with him to Longview to settle a disagreement. Once they got there, the friend could hear Heflin and a man in a back bedroom at a residence talking. The other man seemed angry, and Heflin seemed to be pleading with him. When Buddy Heflin left the house he told the friend he didn’t want to involve her because it would endanger her life. Buddy Heflin told the friend that he’d agreed to do a “one-time deal” that paid a lot of money. Heflin told her, “It didn’t go down like it was supposed to, and he saw something he wasn’t supposed to”. The friend tried to convince Heflin to go to authorities about the situation, but he told the friend that he had been threatened, that if he talked to the police, they would “kill his family”. It is believed that Buddy Heflin might have been the getaway driver of a car involved in a crime. For years Alexis Heflin and her family have tried to find answers related to her husband’s disappearance and possible murder. Alexis Heflin has said that, “more than anything she wants to be able to tell her sons, who look so much like their father, what became of him”. “I’d like to have closure for the boys, and I’d like to have a little funeral with a tombstone”,” They’d have a place to go and something to remember him by.” John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin was born January 31, 1944 and was 24 years old at the time of his disappearance. He was a white male, between 5’5” and 6’0”ft tall. Heflin weighed between 160-185 lbs with Brown hair and Hazel eyes. His friends and family all called him by the name “Buddy”. He was last seen in Starkville, Oktibbeha Co. Mississippi. His sister reported that he came by her residence on 1/1/1969, when their mother brought him by there to catch a ride with one of his friends. This was the last known sighting of John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin. Information and rumors that have circulated over the years, suggests that Heflin was killed near Jackson or Vicksburg, MS and thrown into the Mississippi River. Anyone with information that could help solve this case would be eligible for a reward of up to $2500.00. If you have information that can help, please call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online through the Web Tip link on the home page of the Central MS Crime Stoppers website. Jackson Police Department / Business Burglary

On the morning of September 14, 2016, at around 7:15 am, the manager of Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City on I-55 North at Briarwood Drive unlocked the door and punched in the alarm code but didn’t hear the normal beeps when punching in the code numbers.  Looking around he noticed that the Big Flat Screen TVs that are floor stacked on the floor were not there. Walking to the back of the store in the warehouse he noticed that the store safe was in the middle of the floor and had been pried open.  The manager walked past the safe, to the back of the warehouse, noticing that a hole had been cut in the wall and that the locks had been cut on the huge warehouse roll up doors.  He went to the front of the store to call the police but the phones didn’t work because the phone system had been ripped off the wall in a back office. The Jackson Police Department arrived quickly after receiving the call and started the investigation.  Besides the obvious, they quickly saw where the motion detectors and the cameras in the warehouse had been painted over with spray paint. After dusting for fingerprints and documenting the crime scene, the officers surmised that the burglars knocked a hole in the concrete wall, crawled into the store, spray painted the motion detectors and camera, ripped out the phone system, broke the lock to the huge warehouse door, backed up a truck and started loading up TVs, Appliances and other items. Additional reward money has been put up to help in this case. Anyone with information that could help lead to an arrest in this case would be eligible for a reward of up to $4000.00. Rankin County Fugitive

Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that Marcus Ethan Garrett was convicted by a jury of gratification of lust involving a twelve-year-old child. Garrett failed to appear for his trial and was tried in his absence.  Garrett is currently set to be sentenced on Monday in front of Judge Ratcliff, but sentencing may be continued if Garrett has not been arrested and returned to custody.  Any sentence imposed will be served in its entirety without the possibility of probation, parole, or early release and upon release from custody Garrett must register as sexual offender.

On December 27, 2014, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by a family member who reported that the victim, a twelve-year-old child, had on previous occasions been left alone in the care of Garrett and that during that time Garrett had masturbated in front of the child.  Law enforcement then made arraignments for a forensic interview of the child to be conducted by the Mississippi Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC).

During the forensic interview conducted by the CAC, the child disclosed that Garrett had inappropriately touched her and had masturbated in her presence.  It was also determined that the events occurred at a residence located on Bradford Drive in Rankin County.  A warrant was issued for Garrett’s arrest.

On May 7, 2015, law enforcement officers arrested Garrett and transported him to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department to question him about the allegations.  Garrett was advised of his rights and agreed to speak to detectives.  Garrett told investigators that he had committed the acts alleged by the victim.

Garrett, who had previously posted bond, failed to appear for his trial and left notes with both his mother and employer that he could not go to jail and was leaving town in an attempt to avoid conviction.  The trial Judge determined that Garrett had voluntarily fled in an attempt to postpone his trial.  The Court issued a warrant for his arrest but allowed the State to go forward with the prosecution in his absence.  Following a two day trial the jury returned a verdict of guilty.

Guest stated, “Garrett is a sick and cowardly individual who inappropriately touched and masturbated in front of a minor child.  The testimony of the victim and law enforcement allowed us to secure a verdict of guilty in this matter.   It took great courage for this child to tell of the abuse she suffered.  Her courage has resulted in someone who would prey upon our children being held responsible for his crimes. Guest concluded, “Garrett is now a convicted sex offender who has fled in an attempt to avoid going to jail for his crime. We need your help in locating Garrett to assuring that he will not escape the consequences of his acts.  Anyone with information that could help lead to an arrest in this case would be eligible for a reward of up to $2500.00. Rankin County Sheriff Department Requests the Public’s Help in Identifying Suspect and Witness in Hit and Run

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your help in identifying and located the individuals involved in a hit and run accident that occurred on Friday March 6, 2015. The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:56 P.M stating that an 18 year old man had been run over by a vehicle that had fled the scene. When deputies arrived they were met by the 911 caller and family members of the victim, Maison Montgomery Thornton. Deputies were advised Mr. Thornton left his residence in the 300 block of East Mt. Creek Road near Florence when he suffered from a medical emergency. Mr. Thornton collapsed in the street near his home, but was able to call for help. An unidentified motorist in a white van stopped and attempted to render aid while Mr. Thornton’s family rushed to the scene. Bystanders were attempting to warn traffic to stop when a vehicle ran over Mr. Thornton. The vehicle was described as an older model two door tan car, possible a Buick or Lincoln. A partial tag on the vehicle is believed to end with 134. It is unknown the type of body damage caused to the vehicle, but any visible damage should be to the front of the vehicle. By the time the vehicle was stopped, Mr. Thornton was trapped underneath. Family members and bystanders were able to lift the rear of the vehicle enough to pull Mr. Thornton from underneath. Witnesses say the driver of the vehicle then sped from the scene headed toward Hwy 49 or the Star community. The vehicle was reportedly occupied by two black males. The driver was described as having either “cornrows” or “dreadlocks”.
Mr. Thornton was attended to on scene and transported by American Medical Response to University Medical Center. Mr. Thornton received major injuries from the incident and remains in the hospital at this time.
